On an annual basis, 1 acre of hemp will produce as much fiber as 2-3 acres of cotton. Hemp fiber is stronger and softer than cotton, lasts twice as long as cotton, and will not mildew.
Unlike Cotton which only grows in moderate climates, Hemp is frost tolerant and requires much less water than cotton. It also requires a great deal less fertilizer than cotton and no pesticides or herbicides.
The hemp grown today around the world does not have any of the drug properties of its cousin, marijuana, because it has very low THC content, and the hemp grown commercially has the same properties as the hemp that grows wild in the US and in most parts of the world. The fiber is processed mechanically from the stems using steam and no harsh chemicals.
This property is a benefit hemp has even over bamboo fabrics which are separated from the bamboo stems using very strong chemicals to dissolve the bonds holding the bamboo stem together.
Hemp furniture can be cleaned by spot washing with mild soap and minimal water. Though drycleaning materials will also work on hemp for deeper cleaning. We suggest that you test the cleaning material on an inconspicuous place on your sofa or chair before cleaning any visible spots.
We encourage you to visit http://ecoselectfurniture.com to see the entire 12 collection line and the 6 standard colors. Other colors are available on a special order basis. The furniture itself can also be customized as you will see on the site.
The hemp information above was distilled from the extensive information on the HempBasics.com website, where you will find more uses for hemp and more about its fascinating history.
